Toxic Sleep & Hair Loss
Hypoxia (lack of oxygen) caused by lack of blood flow or oxygen content in blood leads to a reduction in ATP, causing severe impairment of cellular function by disruption of ATP-dependent processes.
Restoration of oxygen is essential for cell survival but damage is amplified during this period by oxygen sensitive mechanisms caused pro-inflammatory cytokines and toxic free radicals.
Reperfusion Injury: Toxic free radicals can cause damage to parts of cells such as proteins, DNA, and cell membranes by stealing their electrons through a process called oxidation.
After researching the condition and learning everything I could about the anatomy and physiology of the scalp and hair follicle, it occurred to me that I may have a missing piece to the hair loss puzzle: TOXIC SLEEP!
Anatomy of the Scalp and Hair UnitThe hair cycleIn men with male pattern hair loss, testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone by 5-alpha reductase, which then binds to the androgen receptors of the hair follicle dermal papillae and activates the genes responsible for follicular miniaturization.
When it comes to hair health and male pattern hair loss, consider the scenario where the scalp experience TOXIC SLEEP (snoring with obstructed breathing and disrupted sleep along with intermittently low oxygen levels) nightly. What happens to any cells including hair follicles that don't get enough oxygen? Like any cells in our body that experiences asphyxia, "oxidative damage" coupled with reduced blood flow and follicle nutrition will cause hair cells die (and the most sensitive ones who get the least amount of oxygen usually die first). This leads me to pose the following question: What if TOXIC SLEEP is the ignition to the forest fire known as androgenetic alopecia (aka male pattern baldness)? Nature vs Nurture: EpigeneticsIn our current medical knowledge in the field of epigenetics, we now recognize the role of the environmental trigger(s) that turns on certain genes.
To add insult to injury, research shows that hypoxic hair follicles upregulate receptors to DHT and thereby increase hair follicle vulnerability.
In my opinion, no transplant surgeon should perform a heart, lung, or kidney transplantation unless the patient's health is optimized to successfully receive the implant. Yet, when it comes to hair transplantation, many surgeons may proceed with little attention to the whole health of the individual patient before, during, and after the procedure. Surgical excellence is but only one of three pillars of a successful hair transplantation.

Percentages lower than 100% in identical twins indicates that DNA alone does not determine susceptibility to disease.
